A Day in the Life of Dr. Mary

It depends on the day!!! Mondays and Fridays are devoted to all things Goddess. This is when I do my writing, product development, videos, coaching, and blogging. Tuesdays and Thursdays I teach at Boise State University and focus on my research. I teach Psychology of Eating (my baby, as I developed the class!), Psychology of Health, Community Psychology, and Social Psychology. I also regularly give guest lectures on body image, eating disorders, and self-love and self-care on campus and off. Wednesdays are my “full integration” days: mornings are all about the Goddess site and afternoons are all about Boise State.

Regardless of the day, I start my mornings off with meditation and journaling, saying my affirmations, and giving my body a little appreciation and gratitude for everything it does for me. Evenings may be spent leading coaching calls, belly dancing, hanging out with friends, reading, journaling, or just vegging out on the couch. I also make sure I move my body temple every day – belly dancing, doing yoga, taking my dog for a walk in the foothills, lifting weights, etc. I have learned over the years to make self-care my #1 priority so I make sure to carve plenty of “me” time out to unwind and recharge so I can show up fully for you and my students.

Why I Do What I Do

My friend and fellow goddess Lisa Marie Rosati likes to say, “Your mess is your message.”  That couldn’t be more true for me. From the age of 12, I suffered from irregular and painful menstrual cycles. At 18, I was finally diagnosed with endometriosis. 5 surgeries, 3 rounds of drug-induced menopause, 9 years in early menopause – which I came out of – and 4 failed fertility treatments later, I finally realized these were all signs from the Goddess. Signs that I needed to wake up and shine my light. (Not to mention that I almost died of pneumonia in 2000; talk about a wake up call!)

At the same time, I was in the midst of building a successful career as an academic, psychologist, and body image expert. My own weight struggles and battle with an eating disorder lead me to devote my research career to studying the factors that contribute to body image dissatisfaction and eating disorders in both men and women. In the past few years, I’ve changed my research topic to more of a prevention perspective. I want to encourage girls and women to love themselves, embrace the goddess within, and walk in their power so they don’t end up with body image dissatisfaction, depression, anxiety, eating disorders, etc. If you’re interested in reading some of my research articles, go here.

I’d like to tell you that all of those surgeries, failed fertility treatments, battle with an eating disorder and osteopenia, and almost dying of pneumonia would have clued me in that something wasn’t quite right. But, I am nothing if not a slow learner. 😉 It all came to a head in April of 2013 during – of all things – a guided meditation (you can read all about it in the blog post “Rude Awakenings” in my Huffington Post column). During this meditation, I realized something: I was living someone else’s life. As a professor in the Department of Psychology at Boise State University, author and co-author of numerous journal articles for leading psychology journals,  in the midst of writing a book on the topic of the psychology of eating, and married for over 20 years one would believe that I had achieved all the goals that I had envisioned for my life. But it was a lie.

What I realized in that moment was that I’ve spent most of my life running from myself – what I had become. Because somewhere deep in my soul I knew this person – my stage name, so to speak – professor, researcher, coach, etc. – wasn’t who I really was. That moment of awakening, which I’ve since come to see as a sacred gift from the Divine, allowed the layers and layers of false masks and truths that had kept me hiding my divine truth to fall away; once I surrendered to the truth of who I am, my inner magnificence – my light – was revealed.

In less than one week of my awakening, the vision of Awakening the Goddess Within was birthed through me and is my gift to owning my truth and empowering, inspiring and supporting women like you to do the same.
